Oltrepò Pavese is a triangular hill district (south-west Lombardy), with the base towards the Po Valley. It was once part of Piedmontese administration, hence the “Antico Piemonte” – “Ancient Piedmont”. Today it is part of the province of Pavia and lies on the opposite bank of the River Po to the capital, which explains why it is called “Oltrepò”, meaning “over the Po”. The entire zone is made up of hillslopes crisscrossed by small and large streams, from south to north, taking their waters to the River Po. Vines are grown in 42 municipalities, and cover about 16,000 hectares, trained with a type of Guyot system. The low and high hills are given over mainly to black grapes (80%), of which the most common are Barbera, Bonarda and Pinot Nero; the mid-altitude hills are home to white grapes, the most important being Riesling Italico and Moscato. Bonarda is the name given to Croatina in the Oltrepò area and is probably a native variety, found almost everywhere in the zone.
