Anyone who went to school in Italy can't help but remember the last line of Leopardi's famous poem

For 200 years it has inspired and been recited by Italians who could get a bad mark at school if they didn't remember it by heart. It's certainly used unwittingly as a metaphor for the limited nature of our present and how our imagination empowers us to go beyond, dream and reach immense spaces. Leopardi had a hedge in front of him which blocked his view of the horizon, but instead of being considered an obstacle this was an inducement to encounter "all encompassing" and "infinite silence" and fly with the mind towards seasons past and back to the living present. A journey to the Infinite.

The Infinity

This solitary hill has always been dear to me
And this hedge, which prevents me from seeing most of
The endless horizon.
But when I sit and gaze, I imagine, in my thoughts,
Endless spaces beyond the hedge,
An all encompassing silence and a deeply profound quiet,
To the point that my heart is quite overwhelmed.
And when I hear the wind rustling through the trees
I compare its voice to the infinite silence.
And eternity occurs to me, and all the ages past,
And the present time, and its sound.
Amidst this immensity my thought drowns:
And to flounder in this sea is sweet to me.
